summerfest
The Ventura Unified School District is attacking the problem of childhood obesity, poor dietary habits and lack of exercise with its nationally recognized Healthy Schools Program. In keeping with that mission, VEP presents summerfest annually in the spring in partnership with our health, school and business communities. This year's summerfest will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2012, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Held at the VUSD Education Service Center, 255 W. Stanley Ave., Ventura, summerfest brings our children and community together in a day-long event of fun, physical fitness events, music and healthy foods. This event celebrates our healthy community and also raises funds for nutrition and exercise programs through sponsorships. It is a free, family-friendly event with the following activities:
Last year more than 7,000 children and families attended this free event.

- Community 5K Run/Walk, Gary Tuttle Mile for elementary school children;
- Frisbee, soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, hoola hooping, dance and more; all-day entertainment & fitness/dance demonstrations on the summerfest stage;
- Fun Zone with inflatables and climbing wall;
- Picnic area with wonderful food to purchase or bring your own;
- Cool, interactive activities focusing on trees, composting, recycling and gardening;
- Vendor Fair featuring sports organizations, health-related information and lots more for adults and kids;
- Health and fitness information;
- Bicycle rodeo and skills course. Bring your bike for free safety check and helmet;
- no/low cost immunizations for Tdap booster required for school entry for all students in grades 7 in the 2012-13 school year. Provided by Ventura County Public Health.

summerfest received the Gold Medal Award and a $10,000 prize from the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports at the Annual Spotlight Awards Ceremony held on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 in Sacramento.
